Catholic Certificate of Religious Studies “CCRS”

The Catholic Certificate of Religious Studies is a online course that introduces students to the basics of the Catholic faith. It runs through a series of intensive study days combined with online classroom teaching. It is a little more demanding than the Diocesan Certificate of Catholic Studies.   All sessions delivered via Zoom.  Open to schools, parishes, and other Catholic organisations within the Diocese of East Anglia.

Modules for Academic Year 2021/2022

NEW TESTAMENT  Taught by Fr Dominic White.

Full study day 9 October 10.00 – 4.00pm

Follow up sessions 11 and 18 October, 4.00pm – 6.00pm.

The course will:

  • Introduce the historical, geographical, cultural, political and religious background to the New Testament
  • Consider the centrality of the Paschal Mystery
  • Consider the formation of the New Testament
  • Review the different types of literature contained in the New Testament (e.g. gospel, letter, parable, miracle story)
  • Discuss the use of the New Testament in the Church today.

SACRAMENTS  Taught by Dr Gemma Simmonds CJ.

Full study day 20 Nov 10.00 – 4.00 pm

Follow up sessions 22 and 29 Nov 4.00 – 6.00 pm.

The course will:

  • Study of the use of signs and symbols in daily life.
  • Consider the Church as the sacrament of Christ’s presence.
  • Provide an overview of the seven sacraments; the Sacraments of Christian Initiation, Healing and Service of Communion and the Mission of the Faithful.
  • Consider the sacraments as part of the universal call to holiness and vocation.

CHRISTIAN MORALITY  Taught by Dr Anna Abram.

22 Jan 2022 10.00 – 4.00 pm, (in person at MBIT, to be confirmed.)

Follow up sessions 24 and 31 Jan 2022, 4.00 – 6.00pm online via Zoom.

The course will:

  • Consider what it means to be a moral person.
  • Consider moral decision-making as a universal human activity
  • Discuss the basic principles of Christian morality
  • Review the role of the Catholic Church as moral teacher and guide
  • Discuss the formation of Christian conscience
  • Consider Contemporary moral issues: e.g. environmental, medical, sexual, social

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING. Taught by Dr Francis Image.

19 March 2022 10.00 – 4.00pm, (in person at MBIT, to be confirmed.)

Follow up sessions 21  and 28 March 2022 4.00 – 6.00 pm.

The course will:

  • Introduce students to what has been called the best kept secret in the Catholic Church – that of Catholic Social Teaching. (CST)
  • Consider the historical origins and documents of CST
  • Discuss and explore the implications of CTS for the Catholic Church today.

Costs for each Module

£60 for full accreditation, includes 1500 word assignment.

£45 for attendance only for complete module

£20 for attendance at full study day only.
