David Lonsdale

Research Associate

David Lonsdale’s current research project is in its early stages. He has an interest in Anglican writers of the seventeenth century (Henry Vaughan, Thomas Traherne et al.) and their responses, in poetry and prose, to the triumph of puritanism in church and state, regicide, civil war and the near-destruction of the Anglican Church. His plan is to research this theme further under the title ‘Poetry in a time of desolation’ (a title intended to encompass both the external desolation of conflict and violence and the inner subjective experience of ‘spiritual’ desolation) with a view to a conference paper, journal article or chapter in a longer work.

He also intends to explore further the possibility of holding a Power of the Word conference in Cambridge in 2021 or 2022, in partnership with MBIT and other interested parties, and organising subsequent publications (see https://www.powerofthewordproject.com).
