Since the completion of his PhD studies on Julia Kristeva, (‘A Theological Response to J.K’s Concept of the “Speaking Being”’, 2012, Heythrop College, University of London) Joseph’s developed an active interest in doing ‘pastoral theology’.   In the past few years, as a priest and educator, he has been working for socially and culturally disadvantaged communities.  This contrast with his previous work experience in privileged ‘zone one’ church and educational environments is a genuine theological locus.   His interest lies in doing theology and academic mission on the peripheries. Previously, as a head teacher of a Catholic secondary school, and a visiting lecturer at Heythrop College, University of London, Joseph was involved in developing ‘a Christian PR’.   Since then, he has been interested in the changing conditions for mission (cultural, pastoral). At present, Joseph works for an urban priority parish as a priest for a BAME community in North London, having been involved in different aspects of urban regeneration.

As a research associate, he would like to apply Julia Kristeva’s model of language and the human person, and her psychoanalytical critique of culture both on theoretical and practical fields. His research at the Institute aims at contributing to a contemporary ‘anthropology of mission’ and reading Icons in a fresh way ‘for the Western eye’, integrating their orthodoxy and our contemporary mindset.
